The Beautiful Medicine
At it's very core, East Asian Medicine maintains the wisdom that the mind-body & spirit must be in harmony for vibrant health and wellness. When there is an imbalance affecting an individual's mind, body or spirit this can create "dis-ease" and can hamper optimal living. Everyone is different and disharmony can manifest discomfort in varying ways and degrees. Likewise, two people may present with an "apparently" similar disease or illness, but the specific pattern & underlying disharmony may be very different.
This medicine seeks to understand the specific pattern of disharmony through examination of an individual's physical, mental, emotional & spiritual aspects. Traditional Asian Medicine is a very diverse medicine with many different approaches and treatment techniques for appropriate conditions that can be used with great effectiveness. The following all fall under the umbrella of Traditional East Asian Medicine: Acupuncture, Shiatsu therapeutic massage, Herbal medicine, Moxibustion, Food Therapy and other complimentary therapies such as cupping, electrotherapy, guasha, etc., - something for everyone and for everything! Hence, treatments will be very different for each person. That is the beauty of our uniqueness!
Our bodies are very efficient at working to heal itself, but sometimes stress (physical, mental, nutritional, environmental, aging, etc.) can be counterproductive to immediate recovery. The therapies that are utilized stimulate the recovery of your own body; they are customized to the individual and will be dependent on your comfort level, and what is most appropriate for your condition.
Your body responds to the stimulus that is being presented and has a corresponding response. How your body responds is crucial to the success and speed of your recovery. It's like changing a habit, initially you have to have some diligence before your body will accept change and then your body will begin to remember/ hold a new pathway. These therapies are similar to this explanation; our bodies often will make more lasting change if there is consistent influence especially when there are big shifts to encourage in the body, thereby integrating and setting in the appropriate new pattern. Consistency is key; hence, treatments are cumulative. Later, maintenance treatments are done to remind the body that it is on the right path. And of course, lifestyle choices are very important and will be brought up in the treatments.
Acupuncture, massage, & moxibustion aim to increase flow, control flow, free blockages to restore circulation in the body and thereby restoring health and wellness. That's what "Qi" or "Ki" is all about!
